Field Trip to Seed Savers

We took a beautiful two-hour road trip, south on highway 52, and found ourselves at Seed Savers in Decorah, Iowa. As a garden-loving family, this was basically our family’s idea of an amusement park. We were all equally happy to be there.

(I am realizing this blog post is going to sound like an ad for them, but I promise you it is not. We just had a really great time, and I would recommend this little road trip to everyone!)

We had passed the catalogue around before we arrived, so everyone had a few seed varieties they were excited to track down. Plus there are all sorts of garden tools, garden decor, apparel, weck jars, and gardening books. Hattie had brought her own money and proudly purchased herself a root beer.

While following Abel around the store, a woman came up to me and said she lives in Wisconsin and receives our newsletter. We had the nicest conversations as we kept crossing paths and found much in common with her and her friend. It was a real joy to me.

And then we went out and had a March picnic. A chilly picnic, only possible because I condition my clan with winter picnics, eating chili and cornbread in the snow. That makes everything relative so that this windy day made for a lovely day to eat ham sandwiches outside.

The grounds of Seed Savers is really stunning- bluffs on both sides with a creek with lots of hiking trails to orchards and gardens. We would love to come back when the gardens are in full bloom, or for their tomato tasting day in the fall. But for the purposes of purchasing our seeds for our garden, this was the perfect time to visit and patron their store. It was the perfect family field trip and we will be back!

I LOVE visits to Seed Savers. I’ve been a member off-and-on for the last dozen years and have walked the grounds several times. It’s on the edge of the Driftless Area of NE Iowa, which is an interesting geological part of the country in itself. Glad your clan had a good time.
